Liver Volume Measurements Overview

Liver volume has been used to assess liver regeneration after a hepatectomy. It has also been used to assess whether or not the patient will have enough liver postoperatively to avoid liver failure. In addition, liver volume measurements have been used to estimate liver reserve prior to contemplated portal systemic shunting. Furthermore, liver volume should also be considered when evaluating patients for entire or partition liver transplantation to avoid the possibility of size incompatibilities. To further define the clinical applications of this technique, studies are ongoing.

This tutorial explains how to trace the liver in a CT data set to find the volume of the liver using VIDA's Region of Interest program. The liver area is traced on each slice and multiplied by the slice thickness to obtain the liver volume.
