Case 1: Diffuse Congential Tracheal Stenosis

Patient History

The patient presented to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with a history of noisy breathing first noticed since two month of age. Bronchoscopy at three months of age revealed congenital tracheal stenosis of the "stove pipe" type. There was a segment of the trachea with complete rings going for about 3 cm towards the carina. At 1 cm from the carina, there was a 1 cm long segmental narrowing with about 90% narrowing in the tracheal lumen. CT of the tracheal and proximal bronchial airway was performed. Re-evaluation at twenty months of age by bronchoscopy and bronchogram reconfirmed the previous findings. Successful tracheoplasty and aortosternapexy were performed at twentyone months of age using two cartilaginous rib grafts.
