ROI:Region Properties Panel

The ROI:Region Properties panel is on the screen by default when ROI is started. However, one can also call up this panel by selecting the Regions Properties menu item under the Properties menu button on the Region Of Interest main panel. The ROI:Region Properties panel is split into two major sections -- Create and Modify. All objects drawn in ROI will be one of two colors depending on whether the object is selected or unselected. The colors are determined by the settings in the Set Colors Panel. Selected objects will be the color corresponding to the Active Box: 3. Unselected objects will be the color corresponding to Active Box: 7. For information on how to change the colors of objects drawn in ROI, go to the Set Colors Panel section. For information on how to select an object, go to the ROI:Edit/List Regions panel
Create Menu Check Box
To create an object, the Create menu must be active. Activate the Create menu by left-clicking on the Create menu check box next to the word Create.
Create Menu
The upper half of the ROI:Region Properties panel has options to create regions on an image. When an object is first drawn, it is selected. Therefore the object is Color 3. When a new object is drawn, the object drawn before it will become unselected. Therefore the old object will be changed to Color 7. For information on how to select an object, go to the ROI:Edit/List Regions panel. Objects are given object names on the ROI:Edit/List panel this is also described in the ROI:Edit/List Panel section of this tutorial.
The possible regions that can be created are as follows:
- Point
A point is created by selecting point in the Create menu and left-clicking on the appropriate part of the image.
- Curve
A curve is created by selecting curve in the Create menu and tracing the desired curve on the image while dragging on the mouse.
- Poly
A polygon is created by selecting poly in the Create menu and tracing the desired polygon on the image while dragging on the mouse. Once the mouse button is released a line is automatically drawn from the beginning of the curve to the end of the curve drawn in order to close the region.
- Line
A line is created by selecting line in the Create menu and tracing the desired line on the image while left-clicking on the mouse.
- Rectangle
A rectangle is created by selecting rectangle in the Create menu and tracing the desired rectangle on the image while dragging on the mouse.
- Spline
A spline is created by selecting spline in the Create menu and left clicking on the screen where you want the splines to be placed. Then right-clicking will connect the splines to form a polygon. The splines are connected in order starting with the first spline you drew and ending by connecting the last spline to the first spline.
- Circle
A circle is created by selecting circle in the Create menu and left clicking on the screen where you want the center of the circle to be placed.
Draw Region Properties Button
- Spline
When spline is selected in the Create menu, the Draw Region Properties button on the ROI:Region Properties panel calls up the ROI: spline Draw Regions Properties Panel. This panel is used to change the distance between splines and to change splines to dots.More Information
- Circle
When circle is selected in the Create menu, the Draw Region Properties button on the ROI:Region Properties panel calls up the ROI: Circle Draw Regions Properties Panel. This panel is used to change the diameter of the circles drawn in ROI.More Information
Modify Menu Check Box
To modify an object, the Modify menu must be active. Activate the Modify menu by left-clicking on the Modify menu check box next to the word Modify.
Modify Menu
The lower half of the ROI:Region Properties panel has options to modify the regions that have been created on the image. Modify will operate on all regions that are selected (i.e., are Set Color 3). To select and deselect regions, see ROI:Edit/List Regions Panel.
The modify options are as follows:
- Move
An object is moved in the direction you drag the mouse. Multiple objects are moved as a unit in the direction you drag the mouse.
To move an object:
- Select move from the Modify menu
- Select the object
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas close to the object
- Continuing to hold down the left mouse button move the mouse till the object is where you want it to be
- Release the left mouse button
- Rotate
You can rotate polygons, curves, and lines. An object is rotated about its centroid. Multiple objects are rotated about the centroid of the group of objects.
To rotate an object:
- Select rotate from the Modify menu
- Select the object
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas
- Dragging the mouse to the right, rotates the object clockwise
- Dragging the mouse to the left, rotates the object counter clockwise
- Release the left mouse button
- Scale
You can scale polygons, curves, and lines. A region is scaled (increased or decreased in size) about its centroid. Multiple objects are scaled about the centroid of the group of objects.
To scale (enlarge or shrink) an object:
- Select scale from the Modify menu
- Select the object
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas
- Dragging the mouse to the right, enlarges the object
- Dragging the mouse to the left, shrinks the object
- Release the left mouse button
- Edit
You can edit polygons, curves, and lines. The edit option is useful for making minor changes to a specific area of an object. Note: Only one object can be edited at a time.
To edit an object:
- Select edit from the Modify menu
- Select the object
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas, on the object
- Drag the mouse following the path you want drawn to another part of the polygon
- Release the left mouse button
- Edit Spline
You can only use the edit spline option on polygons created with the Create menu spline menu item.Note: Only one object can be edited at a time with this option.
To edit splines used to create an object:
- Select edit spline from the Modify menu
- Select the object
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas
- Drag the splines to a new location
- Right-click on the ROI: Canvas to reconnect the splines to form a polygon
- Adjust
The Adjust option should only be used on objects created with the Create menu poly or circle menu items. Adjust fits the polygon to the nearest edge of the object in the image. Note: This option is usually used in conjunction with the smooth option. Please, have patience this function requires some practice to use effectively.
To adjust an object:
- Select adjust from the Modify menu
- Select the object
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas
- Continue left-clicking on the canvas to further adjust the object, if necessary
- Smooth
The Smooth option should only be used on objects created with the Create menu poly or circle menu items. Smooth performs a low pass filtering on the region and reduces the average radius of curvature of the region. Smooth and adjust are often used in tandem to iteratively create a desired region.
To smooth an object:
- Select smooth from the Modify menu
- Select the object
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas
- Continue left-clicking on the canvas to further smooth the object, if necessary
- Add Points
The addpt option can be used to enhance the editing capabilities for editing polygons. Rectangles are created with only points defined at the four vertices. When addpt is selected on the Modify menu, the desired rectangle is effectively converted into a polygon (i.e., points are added in between the vertices).
To Add points to a polygon:
- Select smooth from the Modify menu
- Select the object
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas
- Centroid
The centroid of a polygon can be found by selecting centroid on the Modify Menu. Note: the centroid of a region is a new object that appears in the region list on the ROI:Edit/List panel described in the section on ROI:Edit/List panel.
To find the centroid of a polygon:
- Select centroid from the Modify menu
- Select the object(s) you want to find the centroid(s) of
- Left-click on the ROI: Canvas
Edit Region Properties Button
- Edit Spline
When edit spline is selected in the Modify menu, the Edit Region Properties button on the ROI:Region Properties panel calls up the ROI: spline Draw Regions Properties Panel. This panel is used to change the distance between splines.More Information
- Adjust
When adjust is selected in the Modify menu, the Draw Region Properties button on the ROI:Region Properties panel calls up the ROI: Adjust Edit Regions Properties panel. This panel is used to change the distance of the adjust function's search width. More Information
